Description
Learning Maths by Playing! Anna Mona Lisa is a book about three girls, who are very different, who love strange things, have many questions and love to travel. But Anna Mona Lisa is also a cookbook, a book about dreams and about stars. And, most importantly, it's about learning Math in a different, quite revolutionary way.
But in this book, you don't learn the Math the hard way, you play it! So it's a read, learn, play, cook and travel book.
About Learning:
If a child has difficulties with calculations, the problems are fundamental and can not be solved easily. Like a foundation of a house, if their calculations are shaky, every floor, all the way up to the roof will be shaky as well and any remedy has to start fixing the foundation first.
Take counting as an example:
In kindergarden counting is one of the most important learning objectives However, the counting method is suitable only for smaller numbers but inefficient and error prone when it comes to larger numbers. Therefore, at first grade in school it is quickly replaced by calculating with amounts.
Calculating with amounts is by far the superior method and children quickly understand the underlying structure and logic. Children experience this as quite interesting and exciting. But all this excitement disappears if the child has never left the "counting with numbers" system.
In fact, they never understand, why and how their fellow students can do their calculations so fast and every step going deeper into arithmetics is a plain nightmare for them. Quickly they conclude that it is their very own fault and that they are simply too stupid to “get it”.
Anna Mona Lisa sets out to reinstall the very foundation and gradually build on to it all the way up to the leaving cert. And as we know that creativity, fun and enjoyment are vital cornerstones, we made sure that they are around in every corner.
The Philosophy:
All games presented in this book are learning games which were specifically designed by scientists, teachers and educational therapists and they are all about developing an emotional concept to numbers and calculations.
Research has shown that the brain can deal with mathematics in two separate ways and each activates a different region in the brain: One is responsible for performing exact calculations, the other for rough estimates. But herein lies the problem: Research has shown that a symbolic representation of a given problem is superior to a concrete representation. This is especially true for children who have difficulties in performing mathematical operations.
Therefore, we don’t use concrete figures or objects for the presentation of an addition but rather structured patterns of dots. This allows the child to concentrate the emphasis on the given problem as any distractions caused by real life representations are prevented.
It is a well known fact that learning under stress and anxiety is not very efficient. A positively charged learning environment, which is characterized by joy and relaxation, seems to be a much more obvious method of learning and, especially for young children, the utilization of games for the mathematical learning process is creating this positively charged environment.
